Introduction

The most common hangover symptoms are headache, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, and dehydration. These symptoms are caused by the way alcohol is metabolized by the body. When you drink alcohol, your body converts it to acetaldehyde, a toxic substance. Acetaldehyde is then further broken down into acetate, which is less toxic. However, this process takes time, and while acetaldehyde is present in your system, you may experience hangover symptoms.

  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever: Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help to relieve headaches.

Hangover Prevention

The best way to prevent a hangover is to drink in moderation. If you do choose to drink, there are a few things you can do to reduce your risk of developing a hangover:

  • Eat before you drink: Having food in your stomach will slow down the absorption of alcohol.
  • Drink plenty of water: Alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks can help you stay hydrated.
  • Choose your drinks wisely: Some drinks, such as dark liquors, contain more congeners, which are substances that can contribute to hangovers.
  • Drink slowly: Give your body time to process the alcohol.
  • Get enough sleep: Being well-rested can help your body cope with the effects of alcohol.
